Carpinus betulus, or Common Hornbeam is a deciduous British native tree producing hard, finely grained timber with many uses. It is a large tree with a characteristic grey fluted trunk with ovate, ribbed and serrated leaves that turn a lovely clear yellow in autumn. Catkins appear in late spring.

It grows well on most soils, including clay and chalk. A most useful tree for poor planting conditions.
Mature height: 20metres+ in 20-50 years.
It grows in full sun/partial shade in any aspect in exposed or sheltered areas.
